| In
1989, while watching a news story about another head-on collision
on the Golden Gate Bridge, Robert Guernsey decided someone
had to do something about safety on the bridge. Robert began
developing an idea for
a movable barrier system later known as the Retractable
Delinator System. |
| |
| Robert
began spending every free moment gathering the information
needed design and build a movable barrier for the Golden Gate
Bridge. The main objective for his research was to design
and build a system that would work under the existing conditions
of the bridge. |
| |
| After
spending countless hours trying
to alert Federal, State and Local agencies to the dangers
existing on the Golden Gate, Robert decided to take his ideas
to the citizens of San Francisco and Marin counties. |
| |
| When
the intial designs were complete,Robert
constructed a working model of
the RDS system as it was patented. A press
conference was held to introduce RDS to the the public.
Shortly after, he began public
demostrations to gather public support for a barrier and
gain media attention. |
| |
| With
the help of a victims of head-on collisions support group,
Robert formed the Citizens for a Safe Golden Gate bridge. |
| |
| The CfSSGB
began by building a web site,
circulating a petition
and gathering corporate
sponship to force the Golden Gate Bridge District to address
the issue of a movable barrier on the bridge. |
| |
| While
the Citizens' initial goal was to demostrate that a movable
barrier can be placed on the bridge and save lives, the group
has expanded it efforts to include all projects relating to
safety on the bring. |
| |
Currently,
the CFSSGB is in the process of gathering information about
issues like:
- Safety
for the millions of commuters, pedestrians and bicyclists
that cross the the bridge each year.
- A
suicide barrier.
- Handrails
to seperate the sidewalks and curb lanes.
